I’ve been enjoying reading and responding to your successes and failures from Part A. If you haven’t done so already, head over there and share with us one success and one failure that you discovered from 2016.
I’ll wait here until you’re done.
How To Do A Yearly Review That Rocks – Part A
It’s OK, take your time.
Finished? Great! Because we’ll need those answers for today’s questions.
Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.
– Albert Einstein
Your task for today is going to be to take those successes and failures from last year and see what we can take away from them.
We’re going to ask what would you do differently if you had to do this again. This is not about regrets, what happened happened, but learning from that what can we change to make it more successful next time?
I also want you to look at what isn’t in your list. Was their a part of your life that you felt got neglected.
Neglecting your buckets
Jonathan Fields tells us about three buckets that we all have in our lives: Contribution, Connection and Vitality.
Contribution is what we give out into the world. The knowledge you share with your clients, the friend you help move house, the art you create and sell.
Connection is not just connecting to other people but the world around us. That client whose day you make by really listening to their story, the time you spend in spirituality or with God, the time you spend getting back to nature, getting outside and enjoying life.
Vitality is your health, an area we as trainers are particularly familiar with. The time you give to exercise, how much sleep you are getting, how you fuel your body, what your mindset is, how mindful you are.
Every time you spend time in one of these areas, you add to that bucket. The problem is that your overall health and fulfillment will only be as great as the lowest filled bucket. Neglect one area and your whole life will suffer.
You may be the type of person who gives and gives and gives but ends up not having any time for exercising or spending time with friends. Life is going to utterly exhausting until you get things in check.
Looking at your list of successes and failures, what bucket got neglected in 2016?
Assignment
Open the note, document or grab the piece of paper you completed in Part A and then for each success and failure apply the questions below. You may not have answers for all of the questions or they may not all apply. That’s fine. They are here to get your brain working.
What would you do differently if you did this again?
What additional things would you have liked to have done? Think projects that you have been putting off, ‘bucket’ activities that got neglected, things that felt out of your grasp/skill level.
Are there any big lessons to take from this?
Once you are done read on below.
