Do You Feel Like You Are Working Like A Dog On Your Business?

I know I did. Back in 2010 I was doing every little thing for my bootcamp. Marketing, training, program planning, calling clients who missed sessions, etc.

It annoyed me because all I really wanted to do was make fun workouts and help people get fitter. I didn't want to spend my weekends doing letter box drops or having to approach businesses cold to see if they would help promote my bootcamp.

I knew working hard was part of the deal that came with doing my own thing but at the same time it was really difficult staying motivated and inspired when I didn't have anyone to talk to and bounce ideas off.

So I worked in fits and bursts. Some weeks I got a lot done, other weeks I got nothing done. Most of the time I didn't even know if half of what I was doing was working.

Does any of this sound familiar?

(FYI - I can't see you nodding your head but I appreciate it if you are)

Imagine a world where you got up excited to go train people every single morning knowing that the rest of your business was running smoothly.

Imagine knowing what important things you needed to get done today without having to spend hours planning your week. Imagine being able to get access to expert training on all different aspects of your group fitness business. Imagine being able to get help easily when you get stuck.

Imagine having access to the opinions of your peers with a few taps of a keyboard. You could run a new idea past them, get help with a troublesome client or just have a safe place to rant.

Imagine being crazy inspired and motivated about your group fitness business again!

Wouldn't that be great?

My Story

Hey there,

My name is Kyle Wood and I’m the guy behind Bootcamp Ideas and The Trainers Tribe.

(I also squint when I smile – see right)

I have over 5 years experience as a PT and spent over 4 years of that running a bootcamp with 10 sessions a week and 80+ members in Melbourne, Australia. I've also taught workshops on bootcamp training to trainers in the UK and Australia.

In that time I've met dozens of successful trainers with kick-ass group fitness businesses from all around the world. And they have been kind enough to pull back the curtain and let me into their secrets on what is working and what isn't working.

I'm also a bit of a master at getting stuff done while also maintaining my sanity. All the time I was working full time training clients, I was also running my side business, Bootcamp Ideas. Last year alone I launched 3 books, moved overseas, traveled and worked at the same time for 4 months, ran workshops in Sydney, Melbourne and London,  and launched a new business.

Talking with trainers I realised that a lot of them were also struggling with trying to juggle their business, family, money and time. They told me that they:

  • didn't want to be working like a dog for the next 10 years
  • are tired
  • want to have more time to do their own stuff, like training themselves
  • wish they had more money to invest back into their business
  • had one million things to do on an ever growing check list
  • want their business to grow but they don't know what to do first

So I began brainstorming ideas early on. One idea was a membership site that provided business training and accountability for other trainers. It seemed like a crazy amount of work though so I wrote a book instead about how to start a bootcamp business.

That was really popular but a lot of trainers who bought it either never found time to read it properly or found they still needed more help carrying out the tasks inside.

Again the membership site idea popped up.

I tabled it again and launched the blog on The Trainers Tribe. The first thing we did was a free challenge for planning your year and goals. I knew that challenges with a deadline are an awesome way to get people to get something done. Over 270 people signed up but only 6 made it to the end of the 21-day challenge.

Something was missing still. Why weren't the challengers finishing the challenge?

I got on the phone to my friend Jonathan Fields - he's an expert on turning fear into brilliance - he looked through my site and said,

'Brother, why haven't you got a membership option?'

That same week a reader emailed me and asked if I have a membership option where she could get more ideas and content each week.

It looked like my initial instinct to create a membership site was right, but how to go about it?

I want to practice what I preach, which is that you can run a business (or businesses) while still finding time to travel, see family and friends, do things you love and keep yourself healthy. Running a membership site that allowed me to still do that while also providing amazing training seemed impossible.

And then last month, it clicked.

After picking up the phone and speaking to several readers about what they need help with, I was furiously (picture a mad scientist) trying to mock up some ideas of what a lesson plan would look like. It hit me.

What if I did the work for you? I mean I can't phyiscally do it for you but what if I took out the guesswork of running a business and just said, 'Do this thing, on this day. Keep doing these things and then at the end of the month, this other thing you wanted to accomplish would be done.'

No more spending hours trying to research the best method or what software to use. I've already done that for you!

Do You Make Any of These
3 Business Mistakes?

Mistake #1: Being too one sided in your business

Trainers are usually naturally good at one of two things.

1. They are really good at building community and engaging with their clients.

2. They are really good at planning, creating spreadsheets and smashing through to-do lists.

The problem is the Type 1 starts out strong but then after 12 months or less their bootcamp fizzles down to just a couple loyal clients. They never set up the systems for a sustainable business.

And the problem with Type 2 is that while they might get lots of new clients, those clients move on after just a couple of months because they never connect with the trainer, the other members and the business.

The trick, as with most things, is to find a happy place in the middle.

Mistake #2: Not planning out what you are trying to achieve

How often do you come up with an idea, get excited and then.... do nothing? Or just make it item number 5239 on your to-do list?

We all do this. And it gets us nowhere.

However, there is a solution. By limiting our focus to a few select projects and actually planning out what we need to do in advance, then can start making massive change in our business. People who build successful businesses don't do it overnight - even if it appears that way - it takes consistently chipping away at your projects and goals for months and years on end.

It's hard work - but it's so much easier with the support of others around you who are working hard too.

Mistake #3: Doing the same thing and expecting different results

"Nothing changes if nothing changes."

"Insanity: the definition of doing the same thing but expecting different results."

The observation that nothing new occurs unless the situation is changed is not a new one. So why is it that we do the same things over and over again in our business and just keep hoping that something will change?

I did this. When my marketing didn't work, instead of changing it I just tried to do more of the same. When clients stopped coming to my class, instead of picking up the phone and calling them, I just kept training those that were left. I was getting burnt out from all of the training I was doing, instead of getting smarter about the way I worked I just complained and was grumpy all of the time.

Looking back I probably did this because actually changing things was even harder than the misery of continuing along. It took some small uncomfortable steps and then some big uncomfortable steps to change things around, but ultimately it left me happier, with more clients that I loved and less of those I didn't.

The Trainers Tribe is Like Hiring an Entire Team to Help You Succeed

A lot of the resources out there for trainers have some serious limitations. You could join a Facebook group and get awesome community but there isn't much in the way of quality training.

You could spend thousands on working with a coach, but then you only get access to their limited experiences and philosophies which don't necessarily apply to fitness training.

You could spend money on a live or online business course. It's great, you learn stuff but then you go home to put it into action and you either can't remember something or you hit a roadblock so you put it aside for a while and then it never gets looked at again.

The Trainers Tribe is designed so it's like having an entire team of people helping you out. You'll get your most important business tasks for the week, you'll get training on things like marketing, software and mindset, we'll remind you that your health is important too with training challenges and mindfulness courses and you'll be sharing the journey with dozens of other trainers who you can reach out to at anytime.

This is What You Will Learn in
Next Month's Course

Each month we tackle a challenge in part of our business. The goal is to simplify and automate the parts of our business that can be (marketing, admin, lead generation, programming) so we can focus on the parts that can't be automated (training our clients, caring for them, running fun events).

Next month (April 2015) we are running a course called Full Fat Marketing.

The name comes from the health industries solution to people being overweight by cutting the fat out of everything. Full Fat Marketing is all about keeping the fat in and establishing long term relationships with your clients - thereby helping them create long term health and fitness habits.

It will also teach you how to create an effective marketing system for your bootcamp to attract new clients.

Here's what you can expect to learn:

Full Fat Marketing

A non-slimy, non-body image focused effective approach to group fitness marketing

  • How to Market Without Being Sleazy. If you've never learned about marketing before, I'll show you the ropes so you don't have to resort to gimmicks and hard selling.
  • Most fitness marketing leaves people hating their bodies or destroying their metabolism with diet after diet. I'll show you how to avoid that and what you can do that works instead.
  • The Secret to Having More Clients. Hint: it's got little to do with spending more money on marketing.
  • Why Appealing to Everyone is the Biggest Mistake You Could Make. I'll help you stand out and have new and existing clients fall in love with you all over again.
  • Accomplish a Big Step in Your Business. At the end of the month you will have a sales message (called 'copy') to paste straight onto your website or to use as a flyer/brochure. You can then move on to other areas of your business knowing this part is taken care of.

Plus, join this week and get immediate access to Week 0: The 4 questions every person asks themselves before they buy your fitness services (and how to answer them).

This will help us all get on the same page for the rest of the month.

Here's what others are saying about The Trainers
Tribe method of learning...

Robin Legat Power Jam Fitness, L.A.

I’m the sole proprietor of a bootcamp, and as such, I often can feel like I’m on my own and flying blind when it comes to building and growing my business. I have found the daily tasks that Kyle sends to be manageable, and allow me to focus on areas of my business that I either haven’t thought about or had neglected over time.

The online community aspect of this program allows for a collaborative environment, and creates a way for us all to be accountable to each other, particularly for the more difficult tasks.

I have found that the daily tasks have been very helpful even though I haven't been able to do a lot, either because of time or because they haven't been currently applicable. I have gotten so many great ideas from the information and tasks that you have provided as well as from a lot of the group members. I wasn't sure if I should do this when I received the invite information initially, I am so glad that I did decide to join the group and to move forward with this.

With my situation working at a city owned facility I don't have a lot of control over a lot of the things that have been covered in the group but I have gained a lot of ideas on how to proceed and expand further as I would like to be able to eventually branch out and do this more extensively. I have also found that my confidence level has increased a lot in running the classes that I teach.

Kevin Crisler Dayton, Ohio
Vanessa Birch Momentum Bootcamps, Singapore

I have never been as mindful and proactive as I have this month - in all aspects of my business from training to marketing, due to the 'call to actions' Kyle has encouraged us to complete daily. Kyle has an exceptional understanding of the fitness industry, how to excel as an instructor and business owner and provides tangible explanations, advice and support. The addition of having a private community to bounce ideas and support off other small business owners, is just the icing on the cake.

It's been (and continues to be) one of the best investments I have made in enhancing my offering to new and existing clients, and carving out a strong presence for Momentum Bootcamps, that sets us apart from our competitors.

The number one benefit for me is that you have structured what was already going on in my head. But in my head, it had no structure, so it got put on the back burner. But now it's been brought to light!

It has been great getting one task at a time. I know that I can make a small improvement each day. Already I am noticing a difference within my groups. My session numbers have actually doubled (as in, the average session now hosts 9-10 members, rather than 5ish members) and I think I can put that down to having my 'game face' on and follow up calls for missing members.

We Are in Beta Mode, People

Building a kick-ass resource like this that is designed to help trainers create awesome group fitness businesses takes time and I want to do it right.

Last February I opened The Trainers Tribe for a month in a very raw and unfinished form. Using the feedback from that, I have spent March completely updating it with a new, easy to use design and a new learning method that works really well.

It's looking very polished and finished to me but I want to see what you think. That is why I'm opening The Trainers Tribe to just 100 new members this month.

While you learn about how to become ethical marketing ninjas I'll also be looking to see what breaks, what can be improved and what kind of things you want to learn about in the future.

Enrollments will close when all spots are gone or Tuesday, March 31st 2015 at 11:59pm PST.

Spots left:

When you enroll in The Trainers Tribe today, this is what you will get:

  • Access to next month's Full Fat Marketing course. Complete the course live with the other members and get help and feedback along the way.
  • Access to all future and past course as long as you stay a member. As a new member you will already get access to our Yearly Planning and Mindfulness courses.
  • Access to our Private Online Community. We like to call it the Campfire because it's where our tribe meets to talk. This forum will let you share wins, ask questions straight to other trainers just like you and get help on the weekly lessons.
  • Weekly emails outlining your tasks for the week. It's kind of like hiring a CEO who manages the most important tasks you need to get done this week.
  • Monthly outcomes. Each month you will accomplish one step towards a smoother business that gives you more freedom. Add these steps up over a year and you won't believe how you used to do things.
  • No lock-in contract. Cancel anytime.

If you went with another fitness business course you might be expected to pay upwards of $4,000 for something like this.

But I remember what it's like being a new trainer and having no money, so I've picked a low-cost membership model instead.

You will only pay:

Remember, there is only 100 places going and then the doors will be closed until beta testing is over. That could be months.

Can't I just get this information free and do it myself?

You could, yes. The reason The Trainers Tribe is a better choice is because instead of randomly sifting through the internet for something useful, you can just log in and see what useful thing you need to do each day.

I'm not sure if I can afford $29/month. Any chance of a discount?

Compared to other courses out there that charge $99/month or $2999 up front this is extremely affordable.

Let's do the math: $29/month is $348 over a year. $348 is around what a client would pay for 2 months of bootcamp. If the The Trainers Tribe gets you one new client who stays for at least 2 months OR helps you encourage another client to stay 2 more months then they planned to, it just paid for itself.

Now I hope it helps you get 20 or 30 new clients. Can you see the value now?

Will there be workout ideas too?

Not right now but that is a planned update for May.

5 tasks a week seems like a lot. What if I fall behind?

There is a couple of ways you can tackle the work. You can either try to do your daily task Monday through Friday or you can put aside time on the weekend to do all 5 tasks.

If you do fall behind that's OK because as long as you remain a member you will have access to the content. 2 or 3 months a year will also be 'catch up' months where you can work on a challenge/course of your choice.

How much time will I need to dedicate to this?

You will need to be able to put aside 30-60 minutes for each task. I aim to keep them as simple and stripped back as possible but it still takes time to read the lesson and then work through the work.

I'm still not sure about you... why should I trust you?

Good question. I understand your hesitation.

If you don't know me or know of my years of work on Bootcamp Ideas and The Trainers Tribe then this might not be for you. There is only 100 places available so honestly I would rather someone take it who I don't have to spend time convincing them I'm legit.

How Will Your Business Change This Year?

Have you ever heard the expression 'Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes'?

You may be thinking you don't have the time or money to invest into something like this. Well not with that attitude, gosh! If you don't at some point decide to show up, put in the hard work and break free of your comfort zone then things are going to just stay the same with you being stressed, unsure of what to do next and heading towards saying 'Screw it! I'll just get a regular job.'

(Hm, doesn't that sound exactly like what you tell your clients when they aren't putting in the work?)

Well that's why I'd like to invite you to join me. I want to help you achieve your goals but ultimately you have to make the choice to start.

P.S. Don't forget there is only 100 spots going this month. I'd love for you to join us if you feel like you need some help with your group fitness business.

But don't sit on the fence too long as I know these spots will fill fast. Enroll today.
