How to overcome your doubts and be more effective.
I thought a lot about which part of your business we should start on in February and every time I came back to mindfulness.
You can blame this famous Zig Ziglar quote:
The seed of a bamboo tree is planted, fertilized and watered. Nothing happens for the first year. There’s no sign of growth. Not even a hint.
The same thing happens – or doesn´t happen – the second year. And then the third year. The tree is carefully watered and fertilized each year, but nothing shows.
For eight years it can continue. Eight years!
Then – after the eight years of fertilizing and watering have passed, with nothing to show for it – the bamboo tree suddenly sprouts and grows thirty feet in three months!
No matter how I slice it, I can’t look past the huge impact mindfulness has had on my life and how it will have a huge impact on you.
Think of it like the client who is always on the new fad diet. If they instead had a mindset shift of loving and wanting to care for their body, then they wouldn’t need to diet. Food would be nourishment instead of something to restrict or feel guilty about.
In the same way, before we go on and learn the tools to building a bootcamp business, I feel like we need to spend some time on our mindset and approach to life in general.
I know, I’m starting to get a bit out there. But believe me, the weirdness is just beginning.

Finally there will be a live Skype style session in Week 2 and Week 4 which you can join and ask me questions live.
Here’s a little more detail on what each week will involve.
Week 1 – Sitting
In week 1 we are going start a habit of sitting for a few minutes each day. When I refer to sitting, I actually mean meditating although I don’t use that word as much because it tends to bring up preconceived notions. Meditating is nothing like I expected it to be and I think that’s a good way to come to it.
I just want stop here to point out that sitting is not religious (although some forms of meditation have religious origins) so don’t be concerned that this is going to clash with your faith or that you have to be religious to participate.
Sitting is actually just about sitting (or lying) and shifting your focus from external stimulus to your body. Not unlike when you are doing a really heavy set of squats and you need to focus or when you are running and just thinking about your feet falling one step after another. It’s a moment in your day to check in with your thoughts, your body and see how it’s going. I will walk you through this in our course.
The benefits of meditating are numerous. In fact new studies are showing that meditating changes the wiring of your brain. The video below shares some cool facts for those who are a little bit skeptical:
My reasons for meditating are quite simple. It keeps me sane. I notice two big differences in my behaviour when I’m meditating.
- It allows be to see my thoughts subjectively. As entrepreneurs we often have a million ideas jumping around in our head, pulling at your attention. It’s exhausting. All it takes at that point is one negative thing to happen and our brain, already in overdrive, starts obsessing on that too. Sitting let’s me view these thoughts for what they are. Just thoughts. They aren’t real, it’s just my mind sending me information.
- The space between receiving new information and reacting, gets wider. By this I mean, say someone says something to me that pisses me off. Normally, I would start ranting at them, either out loud or in my head. Sitting creates a space between what they person said and my rant. A space where I can actually pause and consider if what I’m about to say is really that helpful to the other person. A space where I can ask myself if I’m really going to feel better by letting this upset me. It makes for a much calmer, kinder Kyle.
Sitting is going to be key for taking on the week 2, 3 and 4 challenges.
Week 2 – Gratitude
The second biggest impact I’ve found on my work and life is the recent uptake of gratitude. For years I’ve been listening to Brené Brown telling me that gratitude will change your life, but only recently have I been practicing it consistently.
I’ve also found the times you need to practice gratitude the most are the times in which you feel like you don’t have much to be grateful.
Practicing it basically shifts your point of view from ‘Oh look at this terrible thing that happened to me’ to ‘Look at all these awesome things that happened to me’. It doesn’t stop the bad things from happening, but it does shift your outlook to focus on the positive things instead. It will kind of amaze you how much this can change things.
Week 3 – Self-Talk
This one is especially for us business owners. In week 3 we will try to replace phrases that we say in our head that cause us anxiety, anger and sadness with alternatives that take the pressure off.
Have you ever thought ‘I SHOULD lose weight’? Or ‘I HAVE to run that errand today’? How about ‘I MUST stop watching so much TV’?
These phrases can cause us a lot of anxiety because of the way they are worded. Especially if we are repeating them to ourselves over and over each day, constantly putting pressure on ourselves to have to do something.
I’ll share with you some simple alternatives you can use when you catch yourself ‘shoulding all over yourself’.
Week 4 – Listening
To be able to listen, this is an awesome skill to have as a coach.
Listening is often misunderstood as just being quiet until you have something to say. How often have you found yourself doing that? I know I do it all the time.
We are a Me focused culture so naturally whenever we have a conversation with someone it should be all about what we can say. Maybe we have an exciting story that would be awesome to fit in here or maybe some advice that this person really needs to here or maybe we just want to talk about our own problems instead.
In my own experience I know if I hear about a problem in a conversation, I often spend the rest of the conversation thinking about how I can fix it rather than actually listening to what the other person is trying to say.
Listening is about taking yourself out of the conversation and really trying to get in touch with what the other person is saying. It’s about fully understanding them.
As you can imagine this is an incredibly useful tool to have as a trainer.
For example: How many clients do you get who say they can’t stop snacking on foods they don’t want to? Or can’t stop having 2 or 3 drinks every evening?
That’s not really a problem with knowing what to do. Simply trying harder is not going to solve it because clearly something else is going on.
But being able to truly listen to this person, to hear what they are really meaning, will help you help them or at least help them find the help they need.
I know that if you are like me then it really helps to have some people to be accountable to so I’ve built in a way for us to stay accountable.
Your participation in the challenge gives you access to our forum in which you will check in quickly everyday once you have completed your task. This small action well help you stay mindful of your mindfulness challenge (ha!).
